You're ok by us
Here at PSS, we don’t care who you are, who you love, where you're from, what colour your skin is, what your body can do, how your brilliant brain works, what your gender identity is or if your favourite food is Marmite and sardine butties.
If you're a good person with the PSS values at heart, you belong here with us, and you’ll be treated with kindness and respect.
We’re doing as much as we can to make our organisation as inclusive as possible, where everyone who works with us or uses our services feel like they belong.
Our vision for belonging at PSS
PSS is shaped and led by the communities we’re part of, and we find joy in celebrating and learning about everyone’s experiences. Anyone we work with is met with warmth, safety and a deep sense of respect, care and belonging.
We’re passionate about disrupting the oppressive behaviour, power systems and structures our communities face.
The work we’re doing
We want to be the most inclusive, welcoming space we can be for everyone, and we’re working really hard to get there.
When it comes to inclusivity, we believe that there’s always room for improvement. It’s about constantly listening, learning, and looking for ways we can help tackle oppression both within PSS and systemically, too.
The work’s never done. And as society moves and changes all the time, that’s how it should be.
We’ve worked closely with The Social Justice Collective to take a great big, in-depth look at how we operate and how our teams are doing, and we’re ambitious about how we want our organisation to work, look and feel by 2029.
We’ve got plan for how we’ll get where we want to be, and we’ve got a team of people going above and beyond to make it happen.
What do our team say about belonging at PSS?
Our team have a strong sense of belonging at PSS, and thanks to lots of listening, learning and specialist training from experts by experience, our staff survey has shown us that people feel accepted here, no-matter who they are.

99%
Number of people who said they know what to do if they experience or witness oppression
97%
Number of PSS people who said they can be themselves
We won’t tolerate oppression of any kind
We won’t stand for discrimination or oppression of any kind at PSS.
We check in with our teams regularly to check that they're feeling like they belong, and that they know what to do if they experience any kind of oppression at work.
Our staff are all trained in anti-oppressive behaviour, and we encourage all of our team to use kindness and professionalism to call anyone we work with in, or call someone out, if they think someone’s words or behaviour are oppressive or inappropriate.
Calling someone in is when you explain why something someone has said or done is inappropriate and help them to learn from it. We might take someone to one side to do this privately.
Calling someone out is when you tell someone that their behaviour is inappropriate, and you hold them accountable for what they have said or done. We might do this in the moment, rather than taking someone to one side. In this situation, our team might tell someone that their behaviour or words are unacceptable and report it.
If you experience oppression at PSS
If you do experience anything that makes you feel uncomfortable while you’re getting support from PSS, visiting one of our PSS places or chatting to someone in our team, please always tell us by emailing tellus@pss.org.uk or calling 0151 702 5555.
We’ll always take what you say seriously, and we’ll do something about it.
